I remember when China Meiville was here for a lit festival, someone asked him about his writing process, and he said he did a bunch of outlining, and then sat down to write each chapter with the idea that in each chapter the character and plot had to get from A-B.

Which seems to me like a reasonably useful way to break up a big project into smaller steps, and also to be able to see how the small steps contribute to and influence the over all project.

So far, for one of the fics I want to write, I have got as far as the outlining, but still need to write chapter one.
